Sharbani’s Alternative

November 22 - December 6, 2008

Shrabani Roy’s distinctiveness lies in her use of fibre-yarns, mostly dyed in colour, for image formation, and not merely for designing of the pattern on the surface, unlike what the traditional craftsmen do in weaving textiles with fibre-yarns.

One may say, Shrabani constructs her paintings with fibre-yarns. In her work, unlike the traditional craftsman, she combines weaving, stitching, knitting and embroidery, with a combination of yarns of different kinds of fibres. Shrabani, the artist, cares very little for any craft tradition and without batting an eye-lid becomes an eclectic artist to express herself. Instead of loom, Shrabani uses picture-frames to weave into being her pictures, like a painter. And her frames often become integral parts of her pictures.

Quite engaging and brilliantly executed imagery as these are, the question remains as to how much of these are worldly experience borne and how much of these are these are simulated response of art-experience!
