Recent Work by Francis Limerat

The art of Francis Limerat is a tentative outgoing into uncertain space which gradually, slowly, finds satisfactory co-ordinates: it's a complex interconnection which, by means of an erratic but sensitive, subtle graphism, finally resolves itself into clarity and definition.

To start with, vague cultural references may cross the visual memory: labyrinth (Cretan), mandala (indo-Tibetan), navigation chart (Polynesian), dream catcher (Amerindian)...

But these fade away and disappear, leaving only a sense of investigation into a no-man's land situated at the limits of being and consciousness where the mind goes forward, wanders off the track, gets lost, stops bewildered, lies still for a moment, then moves out again, obstinately, tirelessly.

Multiple tracks of thought making for articulation, trails of sensations in search of a syntax.

At times, it's like a biological organism which, via a careful examination of the terrain, by the successive elimination of materials, works out for itself a space in which to evolve, lays out a territory. At other times it's a surface subjected to pressure, breaking into jagged lines. At other times again, its cosmic space so charged with energy it begins to tremble, transforming itself abruptly in a series of lightning flashes.

A network of chance?

The topography of ultimate margins?

Surveying the void?

Beyond philosophical questions, outside any mythology of quest, this movement definite yet undefined, goes on and on, leaving the finest traces. Somewhere, something is being composed.

About Francis Limerat

Francis Limérat (b. 1 August 1946, in Alger) was a teacher at the Regional School of Fine Arts in Angers. In the last forty years or more he has concentrated on two fields, drawing and building linear  and light structures made of painted wood to be hung against walls so that the reflection of their shadows become part of the work itself. His approach is deeply rooted in the 1970’s art school of thought, when making the best use of rationed items was a priority.

His practice has sustained originality by gradually evolving over the course of forty years. The materials and techniques have both matured- pieces of oblong wood of various sizes, often painted, layered or stuck like repetitive modules assembled together in a certain order or disorder; sheet of paper, black ink or sepia worked with a feather or as a tint. This approach allows him to alternate spatial constructions as drawings, playing with the tension between empty and full; and between absences that distribute light, presented as signs. Interestingly, Limerat is both a carpenter and a gardener who invites the viewer to follow visual tracks as if he is taking them on an imaginary journey. The structures provide different options to wander about or to rest or bury

His art has been represented in several galleries in France, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Japan, USA, Switzerland, etc. F. Limérat has participated in many solo and group exhibitions. The artist lives and works in Paris as well as the Bordeaux region.
