P.R Daroz

In the course of his forty- year involvement with clay, the ceramics of P.R Daroz have reflected in India, the transition from domestic vessel to sculpture and architectural installation. Born at Hyderabad in 1944, Daroz completed the first leg of his education with a Diploma in Applied arts and Design (1967), as well as a further training in sculpture (1967-68), both from the College of Fine Arts and Architecture in Hyderabad. He then went on to pursue a further specialization in ceramics under Jyotsna Bhatt in the Faculty of Fine Arts, MS University, Baroda (1970-72).

Daroz’s name has come to be synonymous with architectural large scale ceramic installations in India.
A potter known for his bold and innovative techniques, Daroz has worked in a variety of registers. If he has produced utility-driven tableware, he has also created animal figures in the pursuit of sheer delight and experimented with abstract forms. His ceramic images address and dramatize the dilemma of form over function, and he utilizes the sheer materiality of clay along with his ease of skill and technique, to create works of complete virtuosity.

Meera Mukherjee (1923 - 1998)

Graduated from Indian Society of Oriental Art School, Kolkata, College of Art, New Delhi.

Deeply influenced by the Ghorua/Dhokra sculptors of Bastar in Madhya Pradesh, Mukherjee perfected a technique in bronze that was completely her own. Similarly, she evolved an iconography that was unique. Opposing pulls of mass and movement, strength and vulnerability give an intense character to her figures enhanced by the textural play created by the use of decorative elements on the surface. Many of Mukherjee’s works show the use of Bengali calligraphy on the surface. Manifestations of playfulness and whimsy often add another dimension to her work.

Meera Mukherjee has widely shown in India and in Belgium, Japan & Germany. In 2012 her show was hosted by the Buchheim Museum in Germany along with the Ministry of External Affairs, India.
